Mr. Wannie Byerly, age 89 of John Carroll Road, Denton, NC died Thursday, April 30 at Hinkle Hospice House in Lexington. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Sunday, May 3 at Lineberry United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Steve McLain. Burial with military honors will be in the Church Cemetery. Mr. Byerly was born July 27, 1919 in Davidson County to Thomas Eli Byerly and Cornelia Elizabeth Loflin Byerly. He was a self employed Upholster and Farmer. He was a member of Lineberry United Methodist Church where he had been given a life-time achievement award. He had also served as a Sunday School Teacher, Sunday School Superintendent, and a member of the cemetery committee. Mr. Byerly was a World War II veteran of the Army Air Corp having served with General Charles Chenault and the Flying Tigers. He was presented a Presidential Citation for his service during World War II. He was the oldest serving Republican Precinct Judge in Jackson Hill Township. He was named to the Davidson County Republican Hall of Fame on March 20, 1997. He had served 6 years on the board of Directors of Mountain Vista Health Park. He is survived by his wife, Myrtice Surratt Byerly of the home; Sons, Dale Byerly and wife Lynne and Danny Byerly and wife Eva all of Denton and by 4 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. The family will see friends from 6:00 to 7:30 PM Saturday at Briggs Funeral Home and other times will be at the residence on John Carroll Road. Memorial may be made to Hospice of Davidson County 200 Hospiceway, Lexington, NC 27292 or to the Cemetery fund of Lineberry United Methodist Church, c/o Linda Pearce, 2222 Piedmont School Road, Denton, NC 27239
