. Vernon Hoyt Johnson, age 92, of Volunteer Rescue Rd., Denton died Wednesday, May 6 at Thomasville Medical Center. Funeral service will be 2:00 pm Saturday, May 9 at New Hope United Methodist Church with Rev. Joe Conley and Rev. Jack Luther officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Mr. Johnson was born March 26, 1917 in Randolph County to Rufus Pinkney Johnson and Ila Mae Surratt Johnson. He was a self-employed farmer and a member of New Hope United Methodist Church where he taught Sunday school and was a member of the choir. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances Ball Johnson on April 10, 2001 and by brothers, Joseph Worth Johnson and Edward Lee Johnson. Mr. Johnson is survived by three sons, Terry Johnson and wife Penny and Nathan Johnson and wife Tammy, all of Denton and Alton Johnson of New York, New York, two daughters, Carolyn Cagle and husband Harold and Fonda Jackson and husband Tony, all of Denton. Mr. Johnson is also survived by five grandchildren, Jodi, Lori, Jake, Eric and Cameron and three great-grandchildren. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Friday at Briggs Funeral Home in Denton and other times at the residence on Volunteer Rescue Rd., Denton.
