Sue B. Plaster

August 11, 1939 — October 15, 2022

Mary Sue Brannan Plaster of Lexington, North Carolina died on Saturday, October 15, 2022, after a long battle with cancer. She was 83 years old.

A graveside inurnment service will be held 1:30 PM on Saturday, Oct. 22, at Forest Hill Memorial Park in Lexington.

Sue was a life-long educator. She received her teaching degree at Atlantic Christian College in Wilson, N.C., and began her career as an English teacher and grammarian. After teaching briefly in Columbia and Warrenton, N.C., she taught for over a decade at Denton High School in Denton, N.C. She exposed students, often for the first time, to authors such as Shakespeare and Mark Twain. Along with teaching literature, she taught poetry, including the lyricism of ballads. Midway through her teaching career, Sue decided to broaden her knowledge, teaching students during the day and attending school at night. In 1980, she earned her master’s degree in library science from N.C. A & T University, and thereafter served for almost two decades as the media specialist at Central Davidson Middle School.

Sue had many hobbies, including genealogy. She traveled across the state gathering authentic papers such as Deeds to research her lineage and preserve the family history for future generations. Sue also enjoyed travel with her friends, taking photographs and preserving them in scrapbooks. One of her favorite trips was an Alaskan cruise.

Sue was a talented craftsperson. Her home was filled with needlepoint, embroidery, and macrame projects that she created. She loved music and her favorite artists demonstrate a diversity in taste, including Bob Dylan, Joan Baez, John Legend, Simon and Garfunkel and Elvis.

Sue was born in Johnston County, N.C. to Jesse and Zilphia Brannan. She was preceded in death by brother Jesse Morris and sister Carolyn Roseveare. She is survived by brothers Tommy and Sammy, and sister Linda Pulley.

Sue had three children. She was preceded in death by son Tom Plaster of Casey, S.C. She is survived by daughter Michelle Conner of Philadelphia, PA and son Scott Plaster of Winston- Salem, N.C. She is also survived by daughter-in-law Sherry Plaster of Irmo, S.C. She is survived by six grandchildren: Rebecca, Ken, Jesse, Joey, Emily, and Matthew. Sue was also fortunate to get to know her great-granddaughter Harper Rose.

The Plaster family is being served by Briggs Funeral Home.
