Mrs. Ruth Briggs Fisher, age 89 of Norfolk, Va and a former resident of Lexington , NC died Monday, December 15 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital after an illness of 2 weeks. A Funeral service will be held at Noon, Monday, December 22 at Miles Memorial United Methodist Church in Norfolk, Va. and burial will follow in the family plot at Forest Lawn Cemetery in Norfolk. Mrs. Fisher was born November 16, 1919 in Silver Hill Township of Davidson County to Thomas G. Briggs and Frankie Peters Briggs. Her ancestors settled in Davidson County before 1800. She graduated from Southmont High School and while she had lived in Norfolk, Va. for over 65 years, she maintained close ties to Davidson County, having last visited here in October. She continued until her death to own family land in Davidson County. Mrs. Fisher was an active member of Miles Memorial United Methodist Church, serving on the Church Council and holding various positions in United Methodist Women. She was a member of the Dogwood Garden Club. A lifelong lover of music, Mrs. Fisher was active in the Virginia Symphony Orchestra League. She was married for 54 years to Bryce B. Fisher who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by brothers, J. Floyd Briggs and C. Ralph Briggs and by a sister-in-law, Louise Fisher. Mrs. Fisher is survived by her sons, Dr. Stephen C. Fisher of Fredericksburg, Va.; Robert B. (Rob) Fisher of New York, NY; and Thomas Alan Fisher and his wife Stacie of Richmond, Va.; Grandchildren, Bryce Fisher and Rebecca Fisher of Richmond, Va. and Marion Britt of Boston, Mass. She is also survived by a sister-in-law, Shirley Briggs of Chesapeake, Va.; niece Danna Paul of Livingston, Scotland; and nephew Warren Briggs of Chesapeake, Va. Surviving paternal first cousins include William (Bill) Miller of Hickory; Hollis Trexler and Rachel Tuttle both of Lexington; Michael B. Surratt of Hinsdale, Il. and Jack Briggs and wife Joan of Denton. The family will see friends from 5:00 to 7:00 PM Sunday at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home Tidewater Chapel.
