Ruth Thompson Dewitt

July 12, 1929 — June 2, 2015

Lizzie Ruth Thompson DeWitt, 85, of Lynchburg, VA, formerly of Ellerbe, passed away Wednesday, June 2, 2015 in Lynchburg, VA. Mrs. DeWitt was born July 12, 1929 in Montgomery County, NC , a daughter of the late Risdon Webb and Aerial Mae Cole Thompson. She married Morris David DeWitt of Ellerbe, NC in 1950 and then moved to Pompano Beach, FL where they raised 4 children. Ruth was a loving Christian mother who felt that was the greatest job in the world and was always there for every activity her kids were involved in. She and Morris sacrificed to give all their children a Christian education. She lived her faith both in working for and giving to her church and most any Christian cause that supported the gospel. In later years, when she could not be active, she kept long prayer lists by which she prayed for each person, cause, or family member by name. Ruth was a lifelong patriotic American and conservative Republican whose heroes were Jerry Falwell and Ronald Reagan. She gave to all conservative causes and worked tirelessly for her political beliefs and values, even working the Republican headquarters in Lynchburg until her late 70’s. Surviving are her children, Ruth Diane Mahar (Bill) of Palm Beach, FL, Morris Daniel DeWitt (Vickie) of Lynchburg, VA, Tommy Ray DeWitt (Susan) of Lynchburg, VA, Paul Richard DeWitt (Sally) of Pompano Beach, FL; 10 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren, siblings, Claude Thompson (Shirley), Yvonne McCaskill (Joel), Joann Greene (Cecil), Roger Thompson (Linda), Jerry Thompson (Janice), Hugh Thompson (Diane) and brother-in-law, Wayland Hicks. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband Morris, and sisters, Mary Comer (Wayne) and Mozelle Hicks. Funeral services will be at 11 am Friday in the Chapel of Briggs Funeral Home in Candor, NC with Rev. Jack Phillips officiating. Interment will follow in Candor Cemetery. The family will see friends one hour prior to the service at the funeral home. Mom, we will miss your love, prayers and Godly example.
