Roy Dean Chisholm, 83, passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2019 after a long battle with Parkinson’s disease. He was born and raised in Candor, NC to the late Barney Chisholm and Lillian Blake Chisholm. Preceding him in death are wife, Bonnie Nesbitt Chisholm, brother, Paul Chisholm and step-daughter, Coesetta Rogers. Mr. Chisholm joined the U.S. Air Force in 1954, obtaining the highest enlisted rank of Chief Master Sergeant. Family, fellow serviceman and friends lovingly called him “Chief” throughout the remainder of his life. In his 30 years of service, CMSgt Chisholm was often recognized for his leadership receiving three Meritorious Service Medals and four Air Force Commendation Medals. He was a decorated veteran of the Vietnam War from 1971 to 1972. A former serviceman under Roy’s command, recently shared “Roy was a true leader. He was honest, hardworking and a caring person.” Roy enjoyed fishing, bowling, horseshoes, poker and playing set back with his mother.
Survivors include Sharon Creasy (Boyd) and Andrea Stamper (Rick) from his first marriage to Fran Thomason, Greg Chisholm and Holly Buckley (Johnathan) from his second marriage to Bonnie Chisholm, and step-daughter, Deantha Grattan (Larry). He reveled in his thirteen grandchildren modeling hard work, teaching them to fish, play poker and laugh. He was proud “Opa” to twelve great-grandchildren.
Roy had a special bond with his seven siblings. Surviving are Ralph Chisholm, Frances Laws (Rufus), Louise Reese (John), Joyce Ellis (George), Jerry Chisholm (Carol) and Janie Cockman (D.A.).
A funeral service will be held at 11:30 AM on Saturday, March 9, 2019 at Briggs Funeral Home in Candor, NC. Visitation is prior to the service at 10:30 AM on Saturday as well. Graveside service will follow funeral service Chisholm family cemetery. Officiating is Chaplin Sarah Smith Pitts of First Health Hospice.
