Robert George Dayton

January 21, 1923 — February 15, 2025

Robert George Dayton, 102, of Denton, NC, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, February 15, 2025. Born on January 21, 1923, in Windgate, Maryland, he was the son of Nervana Parks and Charley Dayton. One of eight children, Robert grew up with a strong work ethic, first learning the trade of baking as a child and later developing a love for woodworking—skills that shaped his industrious spirit.

A proud patriot, Robert served his country in World War II as an airplane mechanic in the 427th Army Air Force Base Unit, where he worked as a welder on the B-29 bomber. His deep sense of duty and commitment to excellence carried through in all aspects of his life.

Robert was a restaurateur at heart, known for his passion for good food and hospitality. As the original owner of The Crab Pot in Rehoboth Beach, which he opened in the mid-1950s, he built a legacy of great seafood and warm service. He was famous for his Crab Imperial, a dish he continued to make until the age of 101. He lived by the Dayton family law: “Don’t serve anything you wouldn’t eat yourself.”

Robert is survived by his beloved wife, Donna Dayton; his daughter, Darlene Figel, and son-in-law Walter Figel; and his step-sons, Jon Richard (Melody) and Scott Richard (Jeanne). He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sandy Rawlins, and his first wife, Dottie Dayton. He leaves behind a cherished legacy in his eight grandchildren.

Beyond his career and service, Robert had a lifelong love of woodworking, often making his toys, birdhouses and crafting pieces throughout his life. He was a loving father, devoted husband, and a steadfast friend. His kindness, integrity, and passion for life will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to a veteran’s organization of your choice.
