Richard Smith

July 28, 1931 — November 8, 2018

Mr. Richard William Smith, 87, of Farmer Rd. Denton passed away on Thursday, November 8, 2018 at Hinkle Hospice House.

A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Wednesday, Nov. 14 at Denton Wesleyan Church with Rev. Scott Davis and Rev. Claudie Harrison officiating. Interment with Military Honors will follow at Mountain View Memorial Gardens.

Richard was born July 28, 1931 in Randolph County to Frank Smith, Sr. and Irene Strader Smith. He was lifelong resident of Denton and a veteran of the United States Army having served in Korea. In 1954 Richard returned home from Korea and 5 months later married Peggy Ruth Fritts Smith. He worked as a brick mason, carpenter, and a NC Licensed Contractor for many years before going into the carpet and building supply business. He gave his life to Jesus Christ and served as the Superintendent at Denton Wesleyan Church. He was a member of Denton Lion’s Club for over 20 years and also a past president of South Davidson Boosters Club. In addition to his parents Richard was preceded in death by brothers, Garland and Frank Smith, Jr. and sister, Peggy Briles.

Richard was an aviation enthusiast and was a private pilot. Also he was a master craftsman working with wood. He built a wooden bicycle and a replica of the Wright Brothers Plane for High Point University which earned him the honor of being named one of “Roy’s Folks”. He had a great passion for traveling along with his wife they traveled to all 50 states and 13 countries.

He is survived by his wife, Peggy Fritts Smith of the home; daughter, Robin S. Snider (Marlin); sons, Kim Smith (Lisa) and Kelly Smith (Gail) all of Denton; adopted son, Chuck Holt of Denton; brothers, Archie Smith of Denton and Roger Smith (Doris) of Asheboro; sister, Doloris Briles (Dwain) of Asheboro; 9 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, and 6 great-great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Briggs Funeral Home in Denton and other times at the residence on Farmer Rd.
