Richard Delano Bovender, 74, Greensboro Rd. High Poin died Tuesday, January 1, 2008 at the Pennybyrn at Maryfield Nursing Home in High Point. Funeral Service will be 11:00 AM Friday, January 4, 2008 at Sardis United Methodist Church in Candor with Rev. Glenn Hancock officiating. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery with Masonic Rites. A native of Forsyth County, Mr. Bovender was born May 25, 1933, the son of Arville Cecil and Geneva Leake Bovender. He was a Member of Blair Road UMC in Charlotte, where he was the Treasurer for 25, years, Chairman of the Administrative Board for 2 years and Chairman of the Building Committee for 2 years. Mr. Bovender was also a member and a past Master of the Mint Hill Masonic Lodge; past Master of Wingate Masonic Lodge 578; member of Scottish Rite and Oasis Temple of the Shrine-Charlotte. He was an army veteran of the Korean conflict and member and post Commander of VFW Post 4059 in Mint Hill. He was a purchasing agent for the Harry Grimmer Construction Company in Charlotte. He was preceded in death by his wife, Iris Johnson Bovender in November, 2006 and a brother, Jimmy Bovender in 1998. Survivors include a daughter Delane Hooper and husband John of Jamestown;brother-in-law Garrett Johnson and wife Barbara of Candor; sisters-in-law Nancy Bovender of Monroe; Juanita McCallum and husband Tex of Candor; Janet Hogan and husband Philip of Norman and Pat Johnson of Semmes, AL.; and two grandchildren Austin Hooper and Lauren Hooper. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 AM Friday at Sardis UMC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Sardis UMC, c/o Jeanene Robinson, 2821 NC Hwy 731 East, Candor NC 27229.
