Rev. John S. Oakley

Rev. John S. Oakley, age 94 of Arbor Acres United Methodist Retirement Community in Winston-Salem, formerly of Denton, went to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Wednesday, November 5 at Arbor Acres. Funeral service for Rev. Oakley will be 2:00 pm Saturday, November 8 at First United Methodist Church in Denton with Rev. Bill Foust, Rev. Robert Harris and Rev. Chip Webb officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Memorial Gardens Cemetery. Rev. Oakley was born September 12, 1914 in Yadkin County to Rev. Daniel Allen Oakley and Bessie Spencer Oakley. He was a graduate of High Point College and was an Elder and member of the Western N. C. Conference of the United Methodist church. Rev. Oakley loved his ministry to the Lord. He served many churches across the Western NC Conference; in Thomasville, Farmington, Denton, Albemarle, Peachland, Coleridge, Statesville, Lexington and Salisbury. He served as a minister for 33 years and after retiring continued to minister to people. In 2003 he went to live at Arbor Acres Retirement Center in Winston-Salem. He loved living there because he could continue his ministry. He was a great advocate of the Brotherhood and Sisterhood of the United Methodist church. Rev. Oakley was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Ola Stevenson Oakley on April 1, 2000 and his son John Daniel Oakley on September 24, 2005. He is survived by daughters, Peggy Slack of Denton and Barbara Kiker and husband Harold of Peachland; grandchildren, Michelle Tucker and husband Dean of Lexington, Scott Kiker of Peachland, Adam, Andrew and Abaigail Oakley of Thomasville; great-grandchildren, Heath and Seth Tucker of Lexington and daughter-in-law, Lori Oakley of Thomasville. The family will receive friends prior to the service, from 12:30 to 2:00 pm Saturday, at the church and other times at the home of the daughter Peggy on Forest Park Drive. Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church, P. O. Box 425, Denton, NC 27239, to Peachland United Methodist Church, c/o Ramelle Harrington, 1983 Hornetown Rd., Polktown, NC 28135 or to Arbor Acres Methodist Retirement Center, 1240 Arbor Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27104-1197. Briggs Funeral Home in Denton is serving the Oakley family.
