Nancy Vance

Mrs. Nancy Ross Black Vance of N. Sutton Place, Candor, NC AGE: 79 Died Friday, January 19, 2007 at Duke Medical Center in Durham A funeral service will be held Monday, January 22, 2007 at 1:00 PM at Candor United Methodist Church with Rev. Deborah Wilkins and Rev. Bill Mitchell. Burial will follow in the Candor Town Cemetery Mrs. Vance was born August 10, 1927 in Mecklenburg County to William Earl Black and Sarah Simpson Black. She began her career as a French and History teacher at Long Creek High School in 1948. While there she met her husband Carlton. They moved to Candor in 1949. Nancy taught at Candor High School where she remained until 1961 when she transferred to Samarkand Manor Training School. She taught and worked in the library there until retiring in 1987. After retiring she began volunteering at Montgomery Memorial Hospital in Troy 2 days a week in the medical records department. She also manned the juice cart delivering to patients whom she enjoyed visiting with. She was a member of the volunteer auxillary and served as Secretary for many years. Nancy’s volunteer work was not confined to the hospital. She was also involved with Hospice and Meals-On-Wheels. One of Nancy’s greatest loves was her Church, Candor Untied Methodist. Her many church activities included Sunday School teacher for 30 plus years, Administrative Board/Council on Ministeries Secretary for 30 years, circle member and chairman, terrific Thursday refreshment Coordinator and volunteer and Church Newsletter copier and distributor. Mrs. Vance was also active in her local community, baking breads and cakes for all Candor Lions Club functions as well as other group fund-raising activities, birthdays, baby/wedding showers, retirement receptions and other special events. She was also a prayer partner with Candor Elementary School for 5 plus years. She is survived by her husbandCarlton Vance of the Home, a daughter Carolyn Slaughter of Kingsport, Tenn, a son Ross Vance and wife Sherry of China Grove. Brothers Bill Black and wife Dot; Ted Black and wife Rayonna; Gilbert Black and wife Sharon all of Matthews. Hiram Bunny Black of Cary.Grandchildren Matthew Slaughter; Michael Slaughter and wife Janet; Mark Slaughter and wife Amy, Donna Slaughter and Michelle Hoffner.and 5 great grandchildren A host of Nieces and Nephews The family will see friends from 4:00 to 7:00 PM Sunday at Briggs-Candor Funeral Home in Candor and other times at the residence Mrs. Vance will be fondly and lovingly missed, not only by her immediate family, but her many friends and adoptive family members for years to come.
