Max Hill

January 24, 1920 — March 11, 2014

    Max Wade Hill, 94, of Denton, North Carolina died March 11, 2014 at Thomasville Medical Center. Funeral services will be held 2:00 pm, Friday March 14, 2014 at Central United Methodist Church conducted by Reverend Sharon Lee. Interment will follow at the Town of Denton Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 13, 2014 from 6:00-8:00 PM at Briggs Funeral Home in Denton. A life-long resident of Denton, Mr. Hill was born on January 24, 1920 to Ernest Wade Hill and Joe Anderson Hill. He served his country during World War II first as a civilian radio technician for the United States Army Signal Corp in Honolulu, Hawaii and then in the United States Navy. Early in his career, he was a local merchant and finished his career as Area Manager for The Woodmen of the World Life Insurance Society. Mr. Hill graduated from Denton High School and studied business at High Point College. He served two terms as mayor of Denton. He was a faithful member of Central United Methodist Church taking over in 1945 the Sunday School class that is grandfather, Eddie Hill, established and continued to teach that class until his death. He was a member of the Denton Lodge 404 AF & AM, and a 75-year member of the Woodmen of the World Chapter 976 serving as treasurer. Chapter members enjoyed his famous oyster stew, which he made just two weeks ago. Since 1991 he enjoyed participating three times a week with his wife in the Cardiac Rehabiliation program at Thomasville Medical Center. He studied antique clock repair and loved to collect and tinker. His amazing joke and story repertoire entertained friends and family alike. Mr. Hill is survived by his wife of 73 years, Lillie Deaton Hill; his son Danny Wade Hill of Denton; his daughter, Janet Hill Frekko and her husband Eugene Frekko of Winston-Salem; two granddaughters, Susan Elizabeth Frekko of Barcelona, Spain and Karen Lynn Frekko of Winston-Salem; and a great grandson, Alex Doblas-Frekko of Barcelona, Spain. He was preceded in death by his sister, Inza Massey. Memorials can be made to Central United Methodist Church PO Box 126, Denton, NC 27239.
