Mattie Mcdowell Swaney

Mattie Mae McDowell Swaney, 97, Denton, died Saturday, November 25, 2023 at Mountain Vista Health Park in Denton.  Funeral Service will be 2:00 PM Tuesday, November 28, 2023 at Briggs Funeral Home Memorial Chapel, with Rev. Danny Miller officiating.  Burial will be private.

Born in Randolph County on October 25, 1926, she was the daughter of Auby Way and Pearl Byerly McDowell.  She was employed by Bossong Hosiery Mill for over 39 years.  Mrs. Swaney loved her flower garden, her cats and was a very devoted member of Pleasant Union Community Church.  She was married to William Baxter Swaney on December 24, 1952.  She was preceded in death by him in 1993, 2 daughters, Phyllis Ann Swaney and Janice Swaney Pack, and 2 brothers, Wiley McDowell and Clifton Eugene “Gene” McDowell.

She is survived by 2 grandchildren, Christina Wagner (Wayne) and Jacob Barnes; 8 great-grandchildren, Hunter Goforth, Tyler Barnes, Mollee Wagner, Myles Wagner, Fallon Wagner, Lawson Barnes, Abigail Wagner and Skylar Wagner.

The family will receive friends from 12:30 PM to 2:00 PM Tuesday prior to the service at Briggs Funeral Home.
