Mathew E. Bates, age 63, of Greensboro died Thursday, April 12 at Moses Cone Hospital. A graveside service for Mr. Bates will be 2:00 pm Tuesday, April 17, 2012 at Gilmore Memorial Park Cemetery in Julian with Rev. Charles Dickens officiating. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 pm Monday at Briggs Funeral Home in Denton. Mr. Bates was born October 2, 1948 in Williamstown, New Jersey to Clarence Edward and Katherine Marie Mathews Bates. He was a self-employed attorney with Mathew E. Bates, PA and was a member of the N. C. Bar Association and the N. C. State Bar. He was a graduate of Pfeiffer College and Wake Forest Law School. He was of the Methodist faith. He is survived by his wife of 40 years Jean Davis Bates of the home, sister-in-laws Janice Davis-Patella of Mocksville and Janie Davis of Lexington, brother-in-law Randy Davis of Lexington, Margie Misenheimer and Mike Misenheimer, both of Lexington and Tim Misenheimer of Asheboro, aunt and cousins by marriage and Aunt Catherine and Uncle Everett Doerfel of Vermont. He also leaves behind his beloved cats, April, Elmer, Ethel, Fluffy, Sylvester and Willie.
