Madge Harris

Mrs. Madge Burkhead Harris age 95, formerly of Candor went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 22, 2016 at FirstHealth Hospice House. A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Tuesday, July 26 at Briggs-Candor Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Laura Thompson officiating. Burial will follow at Candor Cemetery. Mrs. Harris was born January 7, 1921 in Montgomery County to Frank Burkhead and Mildred Frye Burkhead. Madge was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was a longtime member of Candor United Methodist Church and enjoyed singing in the choir for many years. She had been a volunteer at Troy Hospital and helped with Meals on Wheels for many years. She worked for the US Postal Service for 30 years and retired from the Pinehurst Post Office in 1983. She was preceded in death by her husband, Wingate Harris; son, Frank Harris; and sisters, Grace Kellam, Minnie McCallum, and Dale Long. Surviving is son, Robert Harris and wife Ellen of Pinehurst; daughter-in-law, Jennifer Harris of Orlando, FL ; grandchildren, Michael Harris, Frank Harris, Jr., and wife Jenny, Michelle Johnson and husband Barrett, and Liz Harris; great-grandchildren, Sophia and Chase Harris, Aislin Thompson, and Jase Johnson. The family will receive friends on Monday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Briggs-Candor Funeral Home in Candor. Memorials can be made to Candor United Methodist Church PO Box 456 Candor, NC 27229.
