Mrs. Lois Lanier Smith, age 88 of Slate Mine Road, Denton, NC died Saturday, Sept. 12 at Mountain Vista Health Park in Denton. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, Sept. 15 at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church conducted by Rev. Chris Smith, Rev. Mike McClellan and Mr. Nick Turner. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery. Mrs. Smith was born May 24, 1921 in Davidson County to Elkanah D. Lanier and Maude Ann Loflin Lanier. She had worked as a finisher and supervisor at both Bisher and Surratt Hosiery Mills. She was a member of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church where she had served as a Sunday School teacher and Choir Director. She had been a volunteer at Mountain Vista Health Park. She was married to Dakota Smith who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by a grand daughter Greta Smith Cody; by brothers, Ed Lanier and Frank Lanier, Laughton Lanier and R. L. Lanier; by sisters, Maggie Williams, Bertha Cranford, Genie Cook, and Alene Tucker. She is survived by a son, Richard Smith and wife Barbara of Denton; by a daughter, Shelbia Jarrell and husband Donnie of the Silver Valley Community, Lexington, NC by a sister Bonnie Gordon of Wayne, Maine and by two (2) grandchildren Tyron Smith of Denton and Tonya Beader of Spring Hill, Tenn.; five (5) great grandchildren and one (1) great great grandchild. The family will see friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Monday at Briggs Funeral Home and at other times will be at the home of the son Richard Smith on Handy Road.
