Leroy Hinesley

December 29, 1933 — October 24, 2022

LeRoy Hinesley passed away at his home on Monday, October 24, 2022 surrounded by his family.

Born in Lenoir, NC on December 29, 1933, LeRoy moved to Asheboro, in 1943 where he attended school and met Betty Lea Trogdon.  On August 21, 1954, LeRoy and Betty were married at her home in Asheboro.  LeRoy was drafted into the US Army in 1956 and served in the Signal Corps at Fort Gordon Georgia until 1958.

After fulfilling his military duties, LeRoy and Betty returned to Asheboro where he continued his education while working second shift as a textile trainee at Klopman Mills in Ramseur.  In 1965, he was promoted to mill maintenance supervisor and relocated to the new Klopman plant in Denton.

In 1973, he acquired Johnson Hardware (rebranding as Kountry Korner Hardware - the name that remains today), and stayed until his retirement in 1995.  During this time, he also reluctantly worked as a loyal helper at Wayside Florist (Betty’s business).

Always a hard working individual, LeRoy was a perpetual tinkerer, world traveler, golfer, mechanic, gardener, wood worker and jack of all trades.  He was always on the move and available to help when a need arose.  His passion for serving others was manifested in the countless hours he spent volunteering at Central United Methodist Church and The South Davidson Family Resource Center.  LeRoy was honored throughout his life for his efforts with community based organizations including the Denton Lions Club, Second Harvest Food Bank, the South Davidson Family Resource Center (volunteer of the year in 2011), and the Town of Denton (volunteer of the year in 2006). In 2019, LeRoy was named Grand Marshal for the Denton Christmas Parade.

LeRoy was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Texie Hinesley; brothers, Billy, Roland and Ernest, and son in law, David Luther.

Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Betty Lea Hinesley of the home; children, Lisa (Chuck) Merritt of Durham, Lee (Jennifer) Hinesley of Asheboro, Scott (Sharon) Hinesley of Charlotte and Blair (Jason) Luther-Davis of Charlotte and 12 grandchildren (Caroline Hinesley, Glenn Luther, Mattie Luther, Emma Hinesley, Will Hinesley, Virginia Luther, Ben Hinesley, Boone Hinesley, McKay Luther, Addison Davis, Avery Davis and Harper Davis).

A celebration of life will be held at Central United Methodist Church in Denton, NC at 2:00 on Friday, October 28.  The family will receive guests at the church hut immediately following the service.
