KATIE SUGG MYERS Age 91 of South Main St. Candor, NC, died Tuesday, June 26 at Sandy Ridge Assisted Living in Candor Born Katie Blount Sugg, November 2, 1915 in Edgecombe County, North Carolina, she was the only daughter of Walton Garrett and Maude Mayo Sugg. She received her education in the Carthage, North Carolina Public Schools and was a graduate of Flora McDonald College, Red Springs, North Carolina. She began her teaching career at Samarkand Manor retiring from there in 1978. She also taught in the Ellerbe, Eagle Springs and Candor public school systems. Miss Katie was a world traveler, had many hobbies and loved to play Canasta. She was a lifetime member of The Round Dozen Book Club having served as secretary and president; the Retired Teachers Association, and Extension Homemakers Association. She was a volunteer at Montgomery Memorial Hospital for many years. She wrote the “Candor News” column for the Montgomery Herald until July, 2006. She was also a Lay Person of the Year at Candor United Methodist Church where she was a faithful member. She was a wonderful, loving mother and friend and will be greatly missed. She was preceded in death by her husband, Herbert Webb Myers and son, James Lester Myers, Sr., and brothers Chaplain Walton G Sugg and Henry M Sugg. She is survived by sons, George and wife, Sue of Candor and Johnny and wife, Wendy; of Rockingham; daughters, Katherine Young of Naples, Italy and Rebecca Willis of Olanta, SC; seven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren and a brother, Lewis R Sugg and wife Martha of Richmond, Virginia. The family would like to express their deep appreciation to Mr. Dave Lowa and staff of Sandy Ridge Assisted Living for their love and great care of Miss Katie. She was so happy there and often said if she couldn’t be at home that was the best place to be. A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM Friday, June 29 at Candor United Methodist Church by Revs. Deborah Wilkins, William Mitchell and David Wade. Inurnment will follow in the Candor Town Cemetery The family will see friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Thursday at the home of George and Sue Myers, 119 Blake Street, Candor.
