Kathleen Chappell Elam, 97, of NC Hwy 731 East, Candor, passed away peacefully at FirstHealth Hospice and Palliative Care in Pinehurst on Monday, January 27, 2025. Funeral Service will be 11:00 AM Thursday, January 30, 2025 at Sardis UMC, with Rev. Glenn Hancock officiating. Burial will follow in the Candor Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 10-11 AM prior to the service on Thursday at the church.
Kathleen was born in 1927 as an only child. Although she lived in Raleigh for a short time, she lived in Candor almost all of her life. She worked a number of years at Capel Mills as Executive Secretary, Candor Elementary as school secretary and Samarcand Manor in administration.
She was a member of Sardis United Methodist Church for more than 60 years. She served as a Sunday School Teacher, Choir Member and was a member of the Sardis United Methodist Women. She loved the member of Sardis and Pastor Glenn Hancock, often giving him a hug and telling him she loved him. Kathleen was a devoted Christian. She read her Bible every day. She lived a life of Christian service.
Kathleen loved to dance. She was a member of a line dancing group at the Senior Center in Troy. The group entertained at many nursing homes.
Kathleen was married to Hoyle Mack Elam for 52 years, often stating that they had a great marriage. She missed him terribly when he died in 2016. She was also preceded in death by her father, Ralph Chappell, her mother Rosa Chappell, and a great-great-grandchild, Ryder Lee DeVogt.
Kathleen’s heart belonged to her family. She was a wonderful cook and served her family many buffet style meals. She helped to raised her grandson, Robbie, who she loved dearly. Her great-grandchildren spent many weekends with her and made countless trips to McDonald’s. She loved and spoiled them any way she could.
Mrs. Elam is survived by her son, Robert Lee DeVogt, Jr. and wife Rindia of Candor; grandson, Robbie DeVogt and wife Brandi of Troy; granddaughter, Angela Martin and husband Robbie of Candor; great-grandchildren, Hunter DeVogt of Pinebluff, Hailey DeVogt of Mt. Gilead, Hannah DeVogt of Troy and Greyson Martin of Candor; great-great-grandchildren, Hazel and Hayden DeVogt.
