Kate Elizabeth Floyd Bivens passed from this world to meet with her Lord on December 20, 2009 after a courageous battle resulting from complications of cancer. Kate was born on November 18, 1933 to Lauton Lewis and Elsie Hedrick Floyd in Davidson County, North Carolina. She was greeted in heaven by her husband John and son Kent who preceded her in death. Kate was also preceded in death by her sister Edith Regan and her husband Hoyle, her sister and law Geraldine Floyd and brothers in law Bill Sturdivant and Harvey Hammond. Kate is survived by her son Mark, his wife Kim, daughters Emma and Hannah of Charlotte and son Lane, his wife Debbie, daughters Jessica and Summer of Denton. Kate is also survived by her sisters Arlene Sturdivant of Denton, Joan Hammond of Asheboro and her brother Bryce Floyd of Denton. Kate also has many nieces, nephews and cousins who loved her dearly. Kate graduated from Denton High School in 1952 where she starred in basketball and later from Mars Hill College. Kate worked at Wenonah Mills, Sealy Mattress, Armstrong Carpet, Bill’s Hosiery Mill and last at Printcraft. Kate loved the town of Denton and was proud to call it home. Kate was a Charter Member of the Denton Ladies Civitan Club and was a Medallion Member representing 25 years of service. She was named Humanitarian of the Year, Civitan of the Year, District West Ava Civitan of the Year and was Chair of the annual Steak Supper. Kate was also awarded the Denton Life Time Citizen of the Year Award, was a past member of the Denton and South Davidson Advisory Council School Board and the Mountain Vista Health Care Board of Directors. Kate was co-captain of her high school basketball team and is a member of the Denton High School Hall of Fame. She will be most remembered for her 40 years as member of the Denton and South Davidson Booster Clubs. She had a deep love for all the youth of Denton, and was most proud of the Kent Bivens Award and its recipients. Kate was a member of the UNC Ram’s Club and would always be willing to discuss the latest Tar Heel game. Kate was also active in her church, New Jerusalem United Church of Christ. She served as President and Secretary of her Church Women’s group and received the James H. Lightborne Life membership award. She also served as Treasurer and on the church Consistory. Kate served as Sunday School Superintendent and was a Young Adult Sunday School teacher. Kate made thousands of gallons of barbeque slaw for the church BBQ dinners. “Kate’s Slaw” was known as “the best”. A funeral service will be held on December 23rd at New Jerusalem UCC at 11:00 am with the Reverend Butch Conrad and Reverend Bennie Clodfelter officiating. Interment will follow at Mountain View Memorial Gardens. Friends and family may call from 6:00 to 8:30 on December 22nd at Briggs Funeral Home in Denton.
