Mary Josephine Johnson Myers, 90, formerly of North Tomlinson St., Candor, died Saturday, April 02, 2011 at Sandy Ridge Assisted Living in Candor. A Memorial Service will be at 5:00 PM Monday, April 4, 2011 at Candor United Methodist Church, where she was a member since 1946, with the Rev. Pat Sykes officiating. She was born April 7, 1920 in Chatham County, the daughter of Joseph Daniel and Sallie Moses Johnson. She graduated from Goldston High School in 1937 and in 1941 from Queens College, Charlotte, with a B.S. Degree in Public School Music. She taught in Roanoke Rapids for two years and in the Montgomery County School System for 14 years. She was preceded in death by her loving husband, Carl M. Myers in 1997. She and Carl were married in Goldston Methodist Church on June 15, 1946 and came to Candor to live. Jo was a member of the Candor UMC Church choir, teacher of the three-year old class, Secretary of Childrens Work of the Fayetteville District, Director of the Cherub Choir and a member of United Methodist Women. She was a member of the North Carolina Music Educators Association, NCAE, Delta Kappa Gamma, Candor Womans Club, Montgomery Arts Council, Montgomery Choral Society and Moore County Choral Society. Josephine and Carl founded the Montgomery County Chapter of the Association for Retarded Citizens. They were instrumental in establishing the first special education classes in Montgomery County Schools. She is survived by 3 daughters, Sally Myers Moore and husband Robert W. of Raleigh, Patrice Myers Monroe and husband Randall W. of Eagle Springs and Susan Myers Twyman and husband Gregory D. of Clemmons; a son, Terry M. Myers of Troy; 6 grandchildren, Sally Elizabeth and Mary Stuart Moore, Drew and Claire Monroe and Sara and Joseph Twyman. The family will receive friends from 3:30 to 4:45 PM Monday prior to the service in the fellowship hall of Candor UMC. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The ARC formerly called The Association for Retarded Citizens, 16 E. Rowan St., Raleigh NC 27609.
