John Carl Ghormley

May 25, 1946 — January 17, 2020

Mr. John Carl Ghormley, 73, of Lake Shore Drive, New London, NC passed away on Friday, January 17, 2020 at his residence.

A celebration of life service will be held 3:00 pm Sunday, January 26, 2020 at Chandler’s Grove United Methodist Church with Rev. Steve Phillippi officiating.

John was born in Odessa, Texas on May 25, 1946 the son of DeWitt Ghormley and Beatrice White Ghormley. He was a proud Texan and always considered anywhere in the Lone Star State, home.  He graduated from Throckmorton High School in 1964.  He attended the University of Texas where he was a member of the Longhorn Marching Band.  Thereafter, he joined the United States Air Force and served as a simulator technician on the KC-135 Stratotanker; ironically, his nephew would pilot these same tankers 30 years later.

After spending approximately 4 years in the USAF, he returned to Odessa, TX, and opened one of the first computer IT stores in the local area.  Years later John moved to North Carolina to start a new chapter.  In New London, NC, he found God and joined Chandler’s Grove United Methodist Church.  He had finally found his home in the church and considered its community one of his biggest blessings.

It was in New London where he met Greta.  She is a wonderful person, beautiful spirit, and loved John unconditionally.  Greta and John began their lives together and lived relishing the future they would share.

John loved being with family and friends.  He loved country music and dancing and the outdoors (especially snow skiing).  Although he joked both became quite difficult after a terrible car accident in 2001, which left him blind in one eye and one leg short.  He never complained about his physical ailments nor let his situation get the best of him.  He continued to spread light and joy through his sense of humor and hearty laugh.

In addition to his parents John was preceded in death by his brother, Bobby Lee Ghormley.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife, Greta Black Rich Ghormley of the home; nephew, Matthew Ghormley; niece, Jennifer Ghormley Arthur.
