Joseph David (Joedy) Steed, Jr., 79, of Candor, passed away Sunday, August 13, 2017 at home from Emphysema. A graveside celebration of his life will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, August 16, 2017 at Candor Cemetery, with Rev. Douglas Dexter and Rev. David Heath officiating. The Steed family will receive friends from 6 to 7:30 PM Tuesday at Briggs-Candor Funeral Home. Mr. Steed was born December 28, 1937, the son of Joe D. Steed and Hannah Frye Steed and was a native of Montgomery County. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by loving wife, Diana O’Berry Steed and sister, Joanna Steed Hancock. Joedy graduated from Candor High School in 1956 and attended N.C. State University, where he was on the Archery Team. He was a veteran of the US Army, a spelunker, a collector of Indian Artifacts, a Town of Candor Commissioner, 32 degree Mason and a Shriner. Joedy was also an avid bass fisherman, and he started the Sandy Ridge Bassmasters in Candor, he was a collector of old automobiles, antique fishing lures and coins. He was a Go-Cart racer, model airplane enthusiast, loved Country and Rock-n-Roll music, and NASCAR. Mr. Steed was an avid squirrel and quail hunter, with excellent hunting dogs, and back in the day, loved to gig suckers in Cheeks and Big Creek. A retired banker of 41 years, he worked at the two banks in Candor, The Bank of Candor for 19 years, 4 months as a cashier/loan officer, then retired from The Fidelity Bank, Candor Branch, having served as Manager and Vice President for 21 years, 6 months. He is survived by his loving and wonderful wife, Winnie Freeman Steed; son, Joseph David Steed III (Deidra Murphy Steed) of Candor, 4 Grandchildren, Erin E. Steed Leach (Ryan) of Biscoe, Caroline N. Steed, Joseph David Steed IV, and Richard T. Steed, all of Candor; children, Jill M. Baxley (Eric) and Cindy Morgan; grandchildren, Lauren and Matthew Mabe of Seven Lakes.
