Joe Palmer Penland New London, N.C. Born October 25, 1934 Died September 14, 2009 He passed away at home September 14, 2009 surrounded by family and friends. Joe grew up in Tannersville, VA and then spent eight years playing professional baseball in the Los Angeles Dodgers and Washington Senators organizations. He moved on to spend 30 years at the North Carolina Department of Transportation in Raleigh, NC. After retiring, he and his wife moved to Uwharrie Point where Joe spent 13 years playing golf and working in his shop. He enjoyed most the time he was able to spend with family and friends. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Annette Morand Penland, son Dr. Christopher Penland, daughter-in-law Kerry Shea Penland, and grandchildren Duncan, Annie, and Grayson. Joe is also survived by sisters Dean Gorsuch, Audrey Harner, Carol Morand, and Judy Thompson and a brother Robert Penland. Passing before him to be with the Lord were his parents Palmer and Mabel Penland and his sister Peggy Booth. A memorial service will be held at Chandler’s Grove United Methodist Church, Blaine Rd., Badin Lake, N.C. at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, September 18th.
