Joe Ed Luther

Mr. Joe Edward (Ed)Luther age 88 of High Pine Church Road, Asheboro, NC died Monday, Dec. 25, Christmas Morning, at Randolph Hospital in Asheboro after declining health for the last year. A funeral service will be held Wednesday, December 27 at 2:00 PM at Oak Grove United Methodist Church, conducted by Rev. Carlton Lucas and Rev. J. Harold Hammond and burial will follow in the Church Cemetery near his parents, grandparents and great grandparents Mr. Luther was born August 28, 1918 in Randolph County to James Whitson Luther and Pricilla Hill Luther. He graduated from Farmer High School. He served in the U S Army Air Corp in the Pacific during World War II. He loved to tell stories about the war. When ask if he was ever injured in the war he would laugh and say “Will, I fell off a log once and cut my leg with the knife I was holding—but that wasn’t much of a medal winner.” He would also say “I flew 31 missions and I got air sick 31 times.” Mr. Luther’s work career included 13 years with Lever Brothers, other sales jobs, raising chickens, swine and beef cattle and working with his son Richard at Richard’s home and Garden Center. Mr. Luther grew up in the Oak Grove Church Community near Lassiter’s Mill, and for the greater part of his life lived in the same community. He was a member of Oak Grove United Methodist Church. He had served his church as Sunday School Teacher and as the Sunday School Superintendent. He was a member of the Uwharrie Golden Oldies and Farmer Charge United Methodist Men He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Rebecca Davis Luther of the Home, sons Rev. Joe Luther, Jr. and wife Mary of Mt. Pleasant; Richard M. Luther and wife Susie of Asheboro. A sister Pauline Luther Hodgin of Asheboro. Several Nieces and Nephews and grandhcildren Joe E. Luther, III; Richard Luther, Jr. and wife Mia and Michael Luther. Great grandchildren Haley, Zoe and Eli The family will see friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM Tuesday at Briggs Funeral Home in Denton.
