    Mr. R. Joe Lax, age 86 of Handy Road, Denton, NC died Wednesday, February 12 at Hinkle Hospice House in Lexington.   A memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM Sunday, February 16 at Briggs Funeral Home Memorial Chapel conducted by Rev. Scott Davis   The family will see friends from 1:00 until 2:30 PM Sunday at Briggs Funeral Home   Mr. Lax was born September 26, 1933 in Davidson County to Henry C. Lax and Lizzie Lanier Lax. He was a veteran of the U S Army and a retired General Contractor who owned and operated Lax Construction Company. He established the Old County Store in Denton which he owned and operated for several years. He was one of the original owners of the Wildcat Mountain Farm. He was an antique collector and dealer. He was married to Frances Hall Lax who died April 10, 2016. He was also preceded in death by his parents, by a brother Charles Lax and a sister Doris Cook.   He is survived by his daughters Patti McClellan of Denton, Cindy White and husband Eddie White of Salisbury; step daughters, Terri Cullop and husband Tim of Denton, Susan Hedrick and husband Terry of Lexington; sister Carleen Terrell of Denton; grandchildren, Tara Fields, Jonathan Fields and Edison White; Step Grandchildren, Lori Robbins, Leah Mason, Callie Jernigan and Abbie Hedrick; 6 great grandchildren.   In lieu of Food and Flowers, memorials may be made to South Davidson Volunteer Fire Department, 22320 South NC Hwy # 109, Denton, NC 27239 or Hospice of Davidson County, 202 Hospice Lane, Lexington, NC 27292   Online condolences may be made at www.briggsfuneralhome.com
