He was born September 13, 1932 in Lexington, NC to Paul and Josephine Carlton. Jerry accomplished many things in his 81 years and that was due to his mornings beginning in prayer in his office and his complete reliance on his Heavenly Father for guidance in all he did. His main goal in life was to glorify God. Jerry was Town Manager, Mayodan, for 24 years, 1972-1996. He was named Western Rockingham County's 1992 Outstanding Citizen of the Year. In 1992, Jerry received a letter from then Governor Jim Hunt, honoring him for being the state's longest tenured Town Manager. He was also a former former Town Councilman and Mayor of Denton, NC, and had served as President of Denton Lion's Club, 1965-66. His son, Craig Carlton, preceded him in death. Jerry loved his family and pets, especially his English Bull Dog, Clarence. He appreciated all the people he worked with saying they were absolutely "the best!"
