James "Jay" Carmon Harris, Jr., a devoted family man, faithful church member, and dedicated professional, passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 16, 2026, at his residence in Davidson County, North Carolina. He was 85 years old.
Born on January 1, 1941, in Davidson County, Jay was the beloved son of the late James Carmon Harris, Sr. and Vonciel Connell Harris. He carried forward the legacy of his family with pride and integrity throughout his life.
Jay pursued a career as a computer programmer with Thomasville Furniture Industries, where his technical acumen and diligence were highly valued. Beyond his professional achievements, he was a proud veteran, having served honorably in the US National Guard. His service reflected his commitment to his country and community.
A man of diverse interests, Jay had a passion for vintage cars and was a gun enthusiast. These hobbies brought him joy and enriched his life, reflecting a spirit of appreciation for craftsmanship and history.
Jay was a devoted member of Mountain View Baptist Church in Lexington, where he took an active role until his health began to decline. His faith and involvement in the church community were among his proudest accomplishments, underscoring his dedication to spiritual growth and fellowship.
He is survived by his sons, Charlie C. Harris and Justin R. Harris, who carry forward his memory and values, and by his sister, Betty Henley, who shared in the bond of family through the years. Jay was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Minnie Somers Harris, with whom he shared a life of love and partnership, as well as his parents.
Family, friends, and all whose lives were touched by Jay are invited to pay their respects during the visitation on Monday, May 18, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Briggs Funeral Home - Denton Chapel, located at 103 E Salisbury St, Denton, NC 27239. A funeral service to honor his life will be held the following day, Tuesday, May 19, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Mountain View Baptist Church, 407 Mountain view Church Rd., Lexington, NC 27292 with Rev. Tim Miller officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery.
