Irene Hughes Lusk

Irene Hughes Lusk, 91, beloved wife of the late William Lusk, Sr. entered into Heaven on Sunday, January 26, 2025. She was the daughter of the late Carmon James Hughes and Harriet Hopson Hughes of Newland, NC and was born at home by a midwife. She was preceded in death by her 7 siblings, Mable Stull, Maxine Guest, Zulene Hughes, Aileen Powell, Marie Clark, J.C. Hughes & J.G. Hughes. She had 9 children: Lila Baldwin (late husband Jerry), late son, William Lusk, Jr (his wife Barbara), James Lusk (Nancy), Jeannie Childers (late husband Terry), Joannie Highfill (Billy), Karen Harrison (Trey), Brenda Freeman (Jimmy), Linda Zeyfang (David), and John Lusk. She had 14 grandchildren: William Lusk III (Billy), Julie Evans, Kimberly Hodgson, Jerry Lusk, Brittany Childers, the late Terry Childers, Jr., Jacob Highfill, Eric Knote, Karry Pack, Janice Hillanbrand, Katrina Blevins, Matthew Zeyfang, Anna Zeyfang, and the late John Lusk, Jr. She had 16 great-grandchildren: William Lusk IV, Ashley Lusk, Abigail Lusk, Zachary Welch, Keira Evans, Harper Martin, Lilly Collier, Sophie Highfill, Caroline Pack, Savannah Pack, Amanda Pack, JayLynn Lusk, Annie Mae Lusk, John Lusk III, Eva Childers, and Gabe Childers.

Irene was a kind, gentle soul who worked very hard all of her life. She grew up in the mountains of NC in Avery County. She loved playing bingo, uno,  books, vegetable gardening, flower gardening, and birds. She had an impressive book collection. She always thought of others before herself.

A funeral service will be held at Floyd Baptist Church with Rev. Derald Smith and Rev. David Hedrick officiating on Friday, January 31, at 2:00 PM. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 PM at Briggs Funeral Home in Denton.

Her family is thankful for the loving care Irene received at Mountain Vista Health Park by many loving caregivers and staff with special thanks to Barbara Nance, Ann Saintilian, Cody Martin and Joni Martin.

Flowers will be accepted or donations to help with the devastation in Western, NC or to Mountain Vista Health Park 106 Mountain Vista Rd. Denton, NC 27239.
