Hoyle Mack “Smokey” Elam, 90, of NC Hwy 731 East, Candor, died Friday at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst. Funeral Service will be 3:00 PM Monday at Briggs-Candor Funeral Home Chapel, with Rev. Glenn Hancock officiating. Burial will follow in Candor Cemetery. Born in Montgomery County on September 15, 1926, he was the son of Howard and Vergie Stevens Elam. He was a member of Sardis UMC, a Navy veteran of WWII, and a member of the Biscoe Masonic Lodge, #437. Mr. Elam retired from Town Creek Indian Mound and the NC DOT. He was an avid Turkey and Deer Hunter, fisherman, and liked to watch sports on television, especially NASCAR. He is survived by his wife of 52 years, Kathleen Chappell Elam, son, Robert Lee DeVogt and wife Rindia of Candor; 2 sisters, Betty Jean Harris of Candor and Rachel Kenion of Candor; 2 grandchildren, Robbie DeVogt and wife Amy and Angela Martin and husband Robbie; 6 great-grandchildren, Hunter DeVogt, Hailey DeVogt, Hannah DeVogt, Dylan Jennings, Tyler Jennings, and Greyson Martin. The family will receive friends from 2 to 3 PM prior to the service Monday at Briggs-Candor Funeral Home Chapel.
