Mrs. Elsie Garner Snider, age 96, passed away Monday, September 26, at her daughter’s home in Greensboro. A celebration of her life will be 2:00 pm Friday, September 30, at Briggs Funeral Home Memorial Chapel in Denton, with Rev. Jay Bowers and Rev. Jim Watford officiating. Burial will follow in Mountain View Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:00 to 8:00 pm Thursday at Briggs Funeral Home and other times at her daughter’s home. Elsie was born in Denton on March 14, 1915 to Rufus Stokes Garner and Mary Arey Garner. On August 17, 1942 she was married to Herman Hanes Snider who predeceased her on August 2, 1981. She was a member of Jamestown United Methodist Church. She lived an active life as a ten-year seamstress for Tomlinson Furniture Company and an in-home interviewer for McGraw Hill, W. R. Simmons and Associates Research and the Gallup Poll. She was a charter member of the Out-Our-Way Garden Club, a member of the Mid-Week Home Demonstration Club, a Brownie and Intermediate Scout leader, a classroom volunteer and an avid traveler. She was a creator of fine clothing from suits and dresses to formals and wedding gowns, a lover of the out-of-doors, a flower and vegetable gardener with a truly green thumb, a defender of religious and political views and an enthusiastic story-teller. Elsie’s greatest joy was helping people and being a good friend and neighbor. She loved to laugh and joke with people. In recent years, she had fun tending to and sharing her flowers and plants and playing with the family cats. She especially enjoyed visiting with family and friends and reminiscing about her childhood and the historical events of her lifetime. In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Daphne Garner Snider and husband Oscar, Minnie Garner Roberts and husband Fred, Ruth Garner Snider and husband Crola, and Esther Garner Haywood and husband Alton. She was also predeceased by her brothers, Lewis and wife Grace Woodell Garner, Albert and wife Frances Cherry Garner, and Fred Garner. A nephew, James Dwight Garner also predeceased her. She is survived by her daughter Carolyn Snider Perkins and husband Mark of Greensboro and by her granddaughters, Patricia Perkins, of Jamestown, and Diana Jarvela and husband Josh, of High Point. She is also survived by her sister-in-law, Dora Painter Garner, of Richfield. She loved her many nieces and nephews and their children.
