Ms. Edith Surratt Russell age 97, of NC HWY 109, Denton passed away Tuesday, April 19, 2016 at Abbotts Creek Health Center in Lexington. A celebration of life service will be held at Chapel Hill United Methodist Church on Saturday, April 23, 2016 at 3:00 pm conducted by Rev. Chris Smith and Rev. Toney Parsons. Burial will follow in the church cemetery. Ms. Russell was born October 26, 1918 in Randolph County to Cordy Lee Surratt and Martha Louella Steed Surratt. She was a lifetime member of Chapel Hill United Methodist Church. She had worked as a seamstress and later at Mountain Vista Health Park. Edith was preceded in death by her husband, William Penn Russell on September 8, 1975; brothers, James W. Surratt, Val Surratt, Lloyd Surratt, and Buren Surratt; sisters, Bertha Nooe and Grace Hill; son-in-law, Ervin Watkins. Left to cherish her memory are daughters, Gertrude Russell Mullinix (Ted) of Myrtle Beach, Peggy Ann Russell Lanier (Jimmy) of Denton, and Sue Russell Watkins of Denton; brother, Max Surratt of Greensboro; sisters, Betty Harrison of Denton and Ann Loflin of Roanoke, VA.; 6 grandchildren, Mike Mullinix of Myrtle Beach, SC, Teresa Johnson of Conway, SC, Bobby Lanier of Denton, Cheryl Melvin of Wilmington, NC, Michele Mazey of Greenville, NC, and Kale Watkins of Polson, MT.; 7 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren, The family will receive friends on Friday from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Briggs Funeral Home in Denton and other times at the home place. The family wishes to thank the kind and loving caregivers to “Ma” while at home and Abbotts Creek.
