Dr. Jerry S. Bates, 87,of Johnson City TN and formerly of Denton and Lexington died on Sunday, September 16, 2018 after a period of declining health.A memorial service will be held at 4:00 PM Saturday, October 6 at Marvin's Chapel United Methodist Church, 1882 Old Boones Creek Road, Johnson City Tennessee. He is survived by his wife, Nancy and stepson, Curtis A. Fullbright, his wife Jana, and three grandchildren: Austin, Bradley (Jordan) and Meredith all of Johnson City, Tennessee. Dr. Bates was born in High Point, North Carolina, the son of O.A. and Nancy Setliff Bates. He graduated from High Point High School and Lincoln Chiropractic College in Indianapolis, Indiana, where he also coached the college basketball team. He practiced in Davidson County, North Carolina for 46 years before retiring in 2004. He attended Marvin’s Chapel United Methodist Church and was a multiple organ and tissue donor. A Lions Club member for 60 years, he served as president of both Denton and Lexington Downtown Lions Clubs in North Carolina and was elected Lions district governor in 1965-66 representing 56 clubs in the Piedmont section of that state. A Melvin Jones Fellow and Jack Stickley Fellow, he also served as club bulletin editor for 38 years. He was voted a life member in Lions Clubs International. On June 18, 2011, he was inducted into the North Carolina Lions Hall of Fame. He was honored by his club in 2003 with the building of a water fountain at Camp Dogwood a $7 million facility serving sight-impaired and hearing-impaired citizens located on Lake Norman, 20 Miles north of Charlotte, North Carolina. He joined the Bristol Host Lions Club in 2008 after moving to Tennessee. In professional activities, Dr. Bates served as state Chair of the NC Posture Committee and was selected as a Regional Representative of the International Posture Council.  A memorial contribution for your favorite charity will be appreciated.
