Mr. Donald Ray "Catfish" Spivey age 81 of A.R. Morris Rd. Denton passed away Thursday, November 17, 2016 at the W.G. Bill Hefner VA Medical Center in Salisbury. A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Sunday, Nov. 20 at Briggs Funeral Home Memorial Chapel conducted by Rev. Derald Smith. Interment with military honors will follow at Macedonia United Methodist Church Cemetery in Troy. The family will receive friends on Sunday from 12:00 pm to 2:00 pm prior to the service at Briggs Funeral Home in Denton. “Catfish” was born in Randolph County to James Willis Spivey and Abigail Bell Spivey on April 29, 1935. He was a veteran of the United States Army and drove a truck for many years for Burlington Industries, Stone Container, and Hedrick Brothers Lumber Company. In addition to his parents “Catfish” was also preceded in death by his wife, Iva Holt Spivey; sister, Margaret S. Daniel; brother, Paul Spivey; and son-in-law, Mark Thompson. Surviving are daughters, Maria Spivey Swaney (Phil) of Thomasville and Bonnie Spivey Thompson of Salisbury; sister, Golda Spivey of Denton; 6 grandchildren, Matthew Swaney, Emily Thompson, Anna Whitley, Lauren Castelloe, Jacob Swaney, and Jeremy Swaney; 6 great-grandchildren, Andrew Michael, Owen Michael, Hunter Whitley, Kaylee Castelloe, Haelynn Whitley, and Francisco Melo.
