Mr. Donald “Donnie” Martin Harris, age 65, of Asheboro and formerly of Troy, passed away Monday, December 29, 2014. Donnie was born in Denton on December 29, 1949. He was the son of the late Rhuell Martin Harris and Annie Belle Cobb Harris of the Eldorado Community. A graduate of West Montgomery High School, Donnie earned his education degree from Appalachian State University in 1973. His passion for athletics and sports led him to choose a career in teaching Physical Education and Coaching. Donnie taught and coached for over 30 years in the Montgomery County Schools. He was ultimately awarded the distinction of life-time membership in the North Carolina Coaches Association (NCCA) for his longevity and service in the coaching profession. Following his retirement, Donnie continued to work part-time teaching Driver’s Education. Donnie is survived by sons Brian Harris of Albemarle, NC; Joe Harris and wife Carissa Harris and grandson, Peyton, of Fayetteville, NC; one brother, Mike Harris of Sarasota, Florida. Services will be held Saturday, January 3, 2015 at Trinity United Methodist Church in Troy, NC. A visitation in the church Fellowship Hall will begin at 10:00 AM followed by a memorial service at 11:00 AM in the church Sanctuary. Memorials may be made to the West Montgomery High School Class of 1969 Scholarship Fund in c/o Jill Foster 4509 Indian Wells Drive, Greensboro, NC 27406, or to the West Montgomery High School Booster’s Club, PO Box 40, Troy, NC 27371.
