Carlton Vance

William Carlton Vance, 89, of N. Sutton Place, Candor, died Wednesday, November 18, 2015 at FirstHealth Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst. Funeral Service will be 1:00 PM Saturday, November 21, 2015 at Candor United Methodist Church, with Rev. Laura Thompson officiating. Burial will follow in the Candor Cemetery. Born May 19, 1926 in Charlotte, he was the son of William Brice and Julia Elliott Vance. He retired from the N.C. Dept. of Transportation after 30 years as a mechanic supervisor. He spent the next 30 years enjoying small engine repair in his backyard garage. He was a member of Candor UMC for over 60 years, a 50 year member of the Candor Lion’s Club and had retired from the Candor Volunteer Fire Dept. after at least 25 years of service. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy. Mr. Vance was preceded in death by his wife, Nancy Black Vance in January, 2007. He is survived by his son, William Ross Vance and wife Sherry of China Grove NC; daughter, Carolyn Slaughter of Kingsport TN; brother, Merton Vance of Washington NC; 5 Grandchildren, Matthew Slaughter and wife Jessica, Donna Slaughter, Michael Slaughter and wife Janet, all of Kingsport TN, Mark Slaughter and wife Amy of Knoxville TN, and Amanda Brown and husband Chad of China Grove NC; 9 Great-grandchildren, Emma Jayne Slaughter, Carter Ross Slaughter, Haddie Beth Slaughter, Lauren Slaughter, Paul Michael Slaughter, Grace Slaughter, Luke Slaughter, Camille Slaughter, and Chadwick Brown. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Friday at Briggs-Candor Funeral Home.
