In his own words….Robert (Bob, Bobby, Dr. Bob, Booze) Smyth died Monday, May 25, 2009. Born March 3, 1944 in Washington DC, to parents William Henry Smyth and Hazel Tysinger Smyth (both deceased), he lived in Denton, NC during his elementary and high school years. Following schooling he pulled his hitch in the army and then ventured into different phases of civil engineering in the southeast and the San Francisco Bay area. His chosen "early retirement" in 1974 left him time to explore his interests. One interest was boating which provided his home for seventeen years, and also a pursuit into commercial fishing for salmon (in California) and shrimp (in Florida). Upon leaving the lure of water he continued to reside in Punta Gorda, FL, during the winters and around Denton much of the summers. His chosen lifestyle has expressed resourcefulness and simplicity – such as indicated by his Volkswagens. He has considered himself very fortunate to have been able to take his chosen way thru life with relatives and friends along the way. He leaves a brother Bill Smyth and wife Iris in Boston, MA, cousin Xenophon Tysinger in Denton, NC, nephews, a niece, various cousins, and many friends. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, June 16, 2 pm, at the First Baptist Church in Denton, 383 West Salisbury St. Rather than flowers, memorials may be directed to the church.
