In Loving Memory of Baxter Wilson Carter
Baxter Wilson Carter 97, of Denton, NC passed away peacefully on November 28, 2025, at Hinkle Hospice House in Lexington, surrounded by his loving family. A devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, he was a steady presence whose faith, humility, and quiet leadership shaped his family, church, and community.
Born on September 25, 1928, in the family homeplace in Denton, NC to Baxter Carter and Eunice Thompson Carter, Wilson graduated from Denton High School in 1945. He attended North Carolina State University and graduated in 1949 with a degree in textiles. He entered the U.S. Army in 1951 and served in Germany until 1953 earning the rank of Corporal. In 1965, he founded Wilson Carter Supply with his late wife, Ruth, and built it from the ground up into the successful, customer-first business it remains today. Beyond his work, he was a respected leader in his town, often laboring behind the scenes to make lasting change. He led by example—never seeking credit, always seeking the good. He was a long-time member of the Denton Lions Club, and served his community in numerous ways, including Mountain Vista Board of Directors, Denton Planning & Zoning Board, Central Carolina Bank Board of Directors, countless church committees, and his beloved Wolfpack Club. Wilson played a behind-the-scenes but key role in the development of Harrison Park. One of his greatest joys was being named Grand Marshall of the Denton Christmas parade in 2022.
A strong Christian, Wilson began each morning with his devotional and prayer. A longtime member of Central United Methodist Church, he loved his Sunday School class and cherished his church family, serving faithfully and living out his beliefs through quiet acts of kindness.
Above all, Wilson loved his family. He is survived by his devoted daughters, Catherine Carter Morris (and spouse John Calhoun) of Chapel Hill, Susie Carter Hubbard (and spouse Rev. Dr. Norman Hubbard) of Thomasville, Anne Carter Bean of Denton, and nephew, Russ Carter Davis of Greensboro. He cherished his grandchildren – Carter Burns (and spouse Blair), Taylor Bean (and partner Tiffany Ferrell), Anna Morris (and spouse Lester Nare), Dr. Ally Morris, and Eryn Bean (and partner Daniel Wray). Wilson adored his great-grandchildren, Daelyn Grace Bean, Emma May Bean, and August Noelle Burns who never ceased to bring a smile to his face. Wilson also had two nieces Leigh Moser (and spouse Dean) of Pittsboro and Janie Truelove (and spouse Stephen) of Benson. He also leaves behind his beloved canine companion, Mackey. His family knew him for his gentle strength, quick smile, sharp wit, and unwavering support.
He was preceded in death by his father, Baxter Carter; his mother, Eunice Thompson Carter; his sister, Vivian Pandora Carter Davis; his niece, Sally Kate Davis; his companion, Billy Ann Mitchell Terrell Allison; and his wife—the love of his life—Ruth Taylor Carter.
Wilson was blessed to have a team of wonderful caregivers over the last few years. Taniyah LaPorte and Latrice Johnson from Affordable Family Care tended to his every need over the last year. Their tender care and patience with our daddy will never be forgotten. Before his last decline, Julie Everhart, Lisa Martin, Sharon Louya, Donna Lookabill, Jennifer Martin, and Beth Peterson provided his care. The family thanks each of his caregivers for their patience and the incredible care provided. Team Wilson made our daddy very happy and for this the family is forever grateful.
Wilson leaves a legacy of faith, integrity, and servant leadership. His quiet generosity changed lives, and his example will continue to guide those who knew him. “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
A celebration of his life will be held on Saturday December 13, 2025, at 2:00pm, at Central United Methodist Church in Denton, NC with a reception immediately following in the church fellowship hut. This day seemed fitting as it would have been Wilson and Ruth’s 72nd wedding anniversary. A private interment will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the South Davidson Family Resource Center in Denton, NC or Central United Methodist Church budget in Denton, NC.
