Mark Lanier

Mark Stephen Lanier, 67, of Cumby Family Funeral Service of High Point, died unexpectedly Sunday at his home. Mr. Lanier was born July 22, 1944 in Randolph County, a son to Wade Curtis and Mary Lee Frank Lanier. A High Point area resident most of his life, he graduated from Denton High School and played minor league baseball as part of the Giants organization. In 1966, Mark graduated from John A. Gupton College in Nashville, TN where he obtained an Associate of Arts Degree in Funeral Service. For the past 20 years, Mark was employed as a funeral director and embalmer by the Cumby Family Funeral Service and was known for his kind and gentle spirit. Mark attended the First Wesleyan Church at Providence Place. An avid sports fan, he loved Atlanta Braves baseball and Carolina basketball. He also loved to fish and spend time mastering the art of gourmet cooking. In addition to his parents, Mark was preceded in death by siblings, Cynthia Clayton, Jerry Lanier and Sidney Lanier. Surviving are his children of whom he loved dearly and was a devoted father - Kelly Lanier Whitlock & husband, Gabriel, of Thomasville; Sandy Lanier Everhart & husband, Ricky, of Denton; Wade Lanier also of Denton; & Casey Lanier Moore & husband, Sam, of Coppell, TX. Also surviving are grandchildren: Jackson & Daniel Whitlock; Lona & Lily Anna Everhart & Sawyer Moore; and a sister: Nancy Johnson & her husband, Charles, of Denton. A visitation will be held 6:00 – 8:00 pm Tuesday, November 8th, at the Cumby Family Funeral Service, 1015 Eastchester Dr., High Point. A graveside service officiated by Rev. Benny Clodfelter will be held Wednesday at 1:00 pm at the Denton Town Cemetery with a visitation at the Briggs Funeral Home, 103 E. Salisbury St., Denton, beginning at noon Wednesday until service time. At other times, the family will be at the home of Mr. & Mrs. Charles Johnson in Denton.
