Newman Isaac Lanier, 91, died Sunday, May 29 at his daughter’s home in Wilmington. A native of Randolph County, Newman was the son of the late William Nathaniel and Lou Buie Lanier. He served in the US Army during World War II in the Pacific Theatre. Newman was a long term employee of Burlington Industries. He was a member of McCray Primitive Baptist Church in Burlington NC. Surviving are dear friend, Thelma Stephens, his daughter, Cindy Lanier Oates and husband Jerry; son, Nick Lanier, grandchildren; Laura Austen Oates and Matthew Sutton Oates, brother; Henry Lanier and sisters; Elma Tucker, Ruth Benbow and Wanda Lea Slawter. The funeral service will be at Tom’s Creek Primitive Baptist Church in Denton, NC at 2 PM, Thursday, June 2, 2011. The family will receive friends from 12:45 PM to 1:45 PM just prior to the funeral service. Interment will follow in the church cemetery with Military Honors. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Lower Cape Fear Hospice, 1414 Physicians Drive, Wilmington, NC 28401-7335 or Chihuahua Rescue at CRT, Inc., PO Box 53115, Cincinnati, Ohio, 45253.
